How to Make Your Flowers Last Longer: 7 Rules
A BOUQUET INSPIRED BY THE ONE YOU LOVE DESERVES TO STAY BEAUTIFUL FOR AS LONG AS POSSIBLE.
Whether you received it or bought it for yourself, a few simple steps, repeated every two days, are all it takes to make your flowers last much longer.
Here are our atelier's tips.
1. CUT THE STEMS AT AN ANGLE
As soon as your bouquet arrives, trim the stems by 2–3 cm with clean scissors or a knife, cutting at an angle.
This increases the surface area that absorbs water, allowing the flowers to drink more effectively. Repeat the cut each time you change the water.
2. FRESH WATER EVERY TWO DAYS
Use a clean vase and fill it with room-temperature water: water that is too cold or too hot will stress the flowers.
Change the water every two days and rinse the vase, as stagnant water is the main enemy of freshness.
3. REMOVE LEAVES UNDERWATER
Leaves submerged in water rot quickly and make the water cloudy.
Remove any leaves that would end up below the water level, leaving only those higher up.
4. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SPOT
Flowers love light, but not direct sunlight.
Keep them away from radiators, fireplaces, drafts, and fruit: apples and bananas release a natural gas that makes flowers wilt more quickly.
5. USE THE FLOWER FOOD
If your bouquet includes a packet of flower food, dissolve its contents in the water in the vase.
It contains what flowers need to stay hydrated and open for longer.
6. ONE FLOWER AT A TIME
Every flower has its own lifespan.
Remove flowers as soon as they begin to wilt: this protects the others and keeps the bouquet beautiful and tidy until the very last day.
7. HATBOXES: DO NOT REMOVE THEM FROM THE BOX
In hatboxes, the flowers are arranged in water-retaining floral foam.
Do not remove them: simply pour a glass of water over the foam every two or three days without soaking it through, and the arrangement will stay fresh for a long time.
AN EXTRA TIP FOR ROSES
If a rosebud bends, trim the stem underwater and leave it in a vase with fresh water for a few hours: it will often stand straight again, just as it did when it first arrived.
